Quick answers

How long should a church anniversary service be?
Plan for about an hour and a half, a little longer than a regular Sunday. Older members and families with small children will thank you for not going much past that, and the meal is where the visiting happens.
What goes in a church anniversary program booklet?
The order of service, the theme and verse, a short history of the church, a list of pastors with their years, the names of charter and longtime members, and a page remembering those who have died.
Who should speak at a church anniversary service?
Usually the current pastor preaches, with short greetings from a former pastor or two and a few minutes from the oldest member. Give every guest speaker a time limit in writing.

The anniversary is on the calendar, the committee has met twice, and now someone has to put together the actual program. Most church anniversary program ideas online are either a list of vague suggestions or a template so formal it fits nobody.

Below is a full sample order of service you can copy and change, written for a small or mid-sized congregation, followed by ideas for the fellowship meal and the afternoon. Adjust the words to your own tradition.

A sample church anniversary order of service

This runs about 90 minutes. Items in brackets are notes to the committee, not for printing.

  1. Prelude. Hymns from the church's early years, played while people find their seats. [Have a slideshow of old photos running on a screen or loop if you have one.]
  2. Welcome and announcements. A lay leader welcomes members, former members and guests by name where possible, and points out the guest book.
  3. Call to worship. A responsive reading built from your theme verse. For example, Leader: "This is the day which the Lord hath made." People: "We will rejoice and be glad in it." (Psalm 118:24)
  4. Opening hymn. A hymn the congregation has sung for as long as anyone remembers.
  5. Invocation. A short prayer of thanks for the founders and for everyone in the room.
  6. Scripture reading. The theme passage, read by a longtime member or by a child and a grandparent together.
  7. Our story. Five minutes from the church historian or the oldest member: who started the church, the hard years, and one funny memory.
  8. Roll call of decades. Ask everyone who first came in the 1950s or earlier to stand, then the 60s, and so on, until the whole room is on its feet. It takes three minutes and people talk about it for years.
  9. Greetings. Letters or short words from former pastors, the regional body if you have one, and sister churches. Two minutes each, read aloud if the writer cannot come.
  10. Special music. The choir, a family that sings together, or someone who sang a solo here decades ago.
  11. Recognition. Name charter members, members with 50 years or more, and the people who keep things running: the treasurer, the custodian, the funeral meal cooks.
  12. In memory. A quiet moment and the reading of names of members who have died since the last milestone. Toll the bell once if you have one.
  13. Sermon. From the theme verse, about 20 minutes.
  14. Anniversary offering. For a specific purpose people can see: a new roof, a fund for the next decade, a mission the church has long supported.
  15. Rededication. A short litany or prayer in which the congregation commits to the next chapter.
  16. Closing hymn. Something everyone can sing without the book.
  17. Benediction.
  18. Group photo on the front steps. Announce it before the benediction, or half the room will head straight to the fellowship hall.

Church anniversary service ideas that make it feel like yours

A program template gives you the skeleton. These small touches make it your church's day:

Fellowship meal ideas

The meal is where former members catch up, so give it room.

Afternoon ideas

Many churches keep going after lunch. Pick two or three:

Where a song fits

A song about your church's story can fill slot 7 or slot 10 in the program, or play during the meal while people look at the photo wall. Our Milestone package includes a 4-minute song about how your congregation started and grew, with a video, plus three 15-second clips to post in the weeks before. You hear and okay every word before the video is made, and nobody has to sing or be on camera. To talk it over first, ask us to call you.
